In the high valleys of the Chamoli district, tucked between ridges of the Zanskar range, lies one of India's most transcendently beautiful natural wonders — the Valley of Flowers National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 87.5 sq km valley blooms with over 500 species of rare Himalayan wildflowers every summer, creating an almost surreal carpet of colour at 3,352–3,658 metres.
Where is the Valley of Flowers?
The valley lies in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, approximately 30 km from Govindghat (which is 19 km before Badrinath on the main highway). The valley is protected as a National Park and biosphere reserve.
Best Time to Visit
Mid-July to mid-August is peak bloom season — this is when the valley is a riot of colour, with hundreds of species flowering simultaneously including brahmakamal, himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis), cobra lily, pedicularis, primula, anemone, and many others. Early July has snow but fewer flowers. September sees fewer blooms but crystal clear skies and no monsoon rain.
Trek Route
Govindghat → Ghangaria → Valley of Flowers
Ghangaria is the base village with basic accommodation (dharamshalas, simple guesthouses, GMVN rest house).
Permits Required
Entry into the Valley of Flowers National Park requires a Forest Department permit, available at the park gate near Ghangaria.
The valley is open from June to October. No camping is allowed inside the valley — day visits only from Ghangaria base.
UNESCO Heritage Status
The Valley of Flowers was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 as part of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve cluster. This status reflects its exceptional biodiversity — the valley contains over 300 species of flowering plants, many of which are rare, endangered, or found nowhere else on earth. Conservation rules are strictly enforced — collecting flowers, camping, lighting fires, and bringing plastic are all prohibited.
Combining with Hemkund Sahib
Ghangaria is also the base for the Hemkund Sahib trek (the Sikh pilgrimage). Many visitors combine both in 2–3 days: Day 1 — Govindghat to Ghangaria; Day 2 — Valley of Flowers; Day 3 — Hemkund Sahib + return to Govindghat.
